"The Woman in the Dunes Kobo Abe

One day, I devoured the book. I was mesmerized by Abe normal. I really could not free myself from the state of anxiety and despair that has put me in the Japanese. The sand dominated my thoughts, I felt it on the skin, mouth and ears, between fingers and in your hair. My thoughts turned to orange.

a biology teacher Jumpei Niki, a passionate entomologist, makes a short trip, the aim is to discover a new species of insect. The man looks in the dunes, as the insects sought to live in the sand. During his search he discovered between the dunes village, where he asks for one night. This request is to be his undoing. The villagers place it in a hut that was built in a sandy hole. In the hut already lives a woman who works every night at the sand removal. The wind ensures that always be succeeded by new sand. This work ensures the existence of the entire village - where the people would stop, shoveling away the sand too much trouble, would disappear, the entire village under the sand. The teacher knows how to start not think he is in a trap. All of his energy he puts into the development of an idea how he escaped the sand hole could. The woman on the other hand makes economic use of the words, she receives her companion almost indifferent. At the same time they tried it slowly to the everyday routine and get used to life in the sand. Although the man never gives up and always think of a way to escape, he falls unnoticed in everyday life and accepted by the sand-driven life.

addition to the action, Abe devotes much space to the thoughts of the main protagonists. They cover a wide spectrum - from the nature of the sand, on the characteristic of women up to the debate about the meaning of life. These fragments touching so many topics that they are certainly read one time can.

The greatest strength of the novel is the language. The author manages to create a unique atmosphere. Very suggestively, he describes the ubiquitous sand, so the life, the daily washing and the hopeless struggle against the constant moving up of new sand masses.

The author leaves the reader with several possible interpretations - the sand can be used as the main character and thus a parable of life are seen. At the same time can the novel as a representation of women (as it claims the title) who know to subdue the man.
